As Tampa slowly reopens amid a global pandemic, we already know that there will be an amplified focus for businesses on cleanliness and consumer and employee health. What other trends can we foresee continuing as we emerge post-COVID? Will there be a real commitment to embrace walkable cities and neighborhoods? While Mayor Jane Castor deploys her Lift Up Local Economic Recovery Plan in downtown Tampa and effectively opens up the sidewalks, parking lots and empty streets to outdoor seating for restaurants and retail, one has to wonder…will Tampa become the next U.S. Walkable City?

Walkable cities provide many benefits to residents and local businesses; from improved health and happiness along with environmental well-being, to improved personal finances and increased local commerce. Along with this wonderful opportunity for Tampa residents and business owners to experience a sort of COVID-inspired walkable urban design, the Downtown Tampa Partnership, an Economic Development Organization, is boosting the Mayor’s efforts with their Tampa’s Downtown Reinvestment & Relief Fund. This fund provides grants to downtown Tampa businesses as they open their doors once again.
