What a pleasant experience on a brisk Sunday afternoon. After locking myself away in the house all week from this stupid flu going around my awesome parents happened to be in Tampa and wanted to take me out. Thanks Mom and Dad!!
When they called I didn’t really know what I was in the mood for, but I knew I wanted to go somewhere I hasn’t been yet so we hit up Ella’s. Really a great choice!
If you haven’t been here it is on Nebraska just south of Nebraska on the east side of the street. Two story building with some very cool art all around, (there is a big steel dragon across the street too!)
The food was very flavorful and cooked just right. I was a little bummed that they didn’t have the sweet potato salad, but my smoked watermelon and apple slaw was different and tasty. The smoked watermelon dressing was almost yogurt like in consistency with a very subtle nutty flavor.
Now for the chicken and waffles! The corn-flake breading was excellent, just crispy enough and didn’t all pull of the chicken when you take a bite. Both drums we very meaty and the thigh was huge. Granted, this was probably not the best meal to have after getting over a cold, but damn it I love chicken and waffles.
The waffle was also dead on, hot and soft in the middle and slightly crispy on the outside. I especially enjoyed the bourbon maple gravy. The gray had almost a mild chocolate flavor which went perfectly with the whole meal.
Overall, loved it! Can’t wait to go back.
